Sergio Perez creates goofy history after breaking equally goofy Red Bull streak
With his win in Baku, Sergio Perez secured his first F1 victory for new team Red Bull. In the process, he also managed to create a little bit of goofy and weird history.
Perez took advantage of Lewis Hamilton’s blunder and teammate Max Verstappen’s crash to secure P1. He also holds a new and weird Red Bull record to his name.
He became the first Red Bull driver without consecutive double letters in his name to win a race. Other winners in Sebastian VeTTel, Mark WeBBer, Daniel RiCCiardo and the aforementioned VerstaPPen all have consecutive double letters in their names. It is a bizarre and hilarious statistic, but not one Perez will treasure more than his win.

The start of something great
Checo was all smiles as he won the race, and he will hope this is the moment that kick-starts his career at Red Bull. He had initially not lived up to his lofty expectations, but this win could act as a catalyst for a great season.
Additionally, Red Bull will be pleased with Perez. With him in form, they can now launch a two-pronged attack on Mercedes in their pursuit of the Constructor’s Championship. With Valtteri Bottas out of form, Lewis Hamilton should be unable to cope with two top drivers and their pressure.
One could say Mercedes have the pace to match Red Bull, and they are every bit as capable as their rivals. But the momentum is with the latter, and they will not want to surrender it and the lead to Mercedes, no matter how rejuvenated they may be next race.
The ball’s in Red Bull’s court. As long as they keep up the consistency, what Mercedes does is immaterial. For the first time in a long time, Mercedes’ domination is being well and truly challenged. Red Bull holds all the cards, and they will want to make sure Mercedes doesn’t beat them at this poker game when the season is over.
